Pay attention to the situation of community without a community!

Can we diagnose the patterns of conflict and division in Korean society today and find the concept of the community that we imagine and the solutions to realize it? Community without Community reexamines the notion of community through the prism of community in the era of absence of community and discusses communities in contemporary Korean society. Starting with a historical exploration of the place of communities in relation to individuals and the world, this book proceeds to reflect on and analyze the conflicts and confrontations of gender, generation, and region that Korean society is facing today. It then delves into issues of race, ethnicity, and global citizenship that arise on the way to a society of hospitality, and in multilayered, dynamic encounters and communication emerging as we enter the age of globalization and hyper-connectivity.

This is the first fruit of the "Humanities on Alternative Community Series", published by the Center for Cross-Cultural Studies at Kyung Hee University (headed by Jungwon Park). In the face of inequality, discrimination, violence, hate and extreme egotism in our society, what ‘principles of hope’ can the humanities of our time say and how can they channel them into the practical energy in the concrete realms of life? The "Humanities on Alternative Community Series" from the Center for Cross-Cultural Studies was conceived in contemplation of sustainable models of alternative communities and feasible policy proposals. The series aims to reflect on and contemplate the theoretical and practical dilemmas faced by our time while facilitating humanities-related discussions in Korean society on alternative communities.
